I Hate My Ballet Class

Posted in Classes, The Dancing Life with tags on March 23, 2010 by Karmela

To save some cashola, I enrolled in a once-weekly beginner ballet class at a nearby county rec center. Couldn’t quit dancing altogether but couldn’t afford to pay $18 per class at my wonderful old studio, plus travel 26 miles roundtrip for classes.

So I looked around for more affordable classes closer to my house. There’s a well-regarded ballet studio a mere 3 1/2 miles away from me but classes there were still a steep $20 each, and that’s for a one-hour only adult class. So I cast a wider net and found said county rec center class, which to my delight (at the time), cost a mere $77 for 10 sessions.

I guess you get what you pay for. The teacher, although a very nice and personable woman, more often than not comes to class unprepared. Her combinations frequently don’t go in time with phrase of the music, she forgets them midway through, she teaches practically no technique and issues no one-on-one corrections.

And then we come to the center where normal ballet studio etiquette flies out the window. She lets the guys stand in front and lets them go first when we go across the floor. Durign pirouette time, she doesn’t give any pointers and lets us land our passé foot in any direction. Her arms are all over the place, doesn’t teach us proper épaulement, hasn’t made us do many basic allegro moves like sautés and echappés and temp levés, and her center combinations have remained the same week after week after week. Drives me nuts.

She frequently starts class late because she’s busy chatting with other students, although her saving grace is that she does end the class late so we get a bit more for our money. Just a little bit more, though.

I can’t say this class improved my technique at all, or even that I enjoyed attending. I think for the spring I’m going to bite the bullet and pay the higher fee at the ballet studio close to my house. At least I know I’m going to get a right and proper ballet class, not this joke of a class I’m now attending.

Wherein my teacher tells me my yoga mat is shit…

Posted in Yoga with tags , , , , on March 22, 2010 by Karmela

At the end of handstand class yesterday, as yogateach was wrapping up the class and giving us some last minute advice, one of the things she said was, “…and everybody should get a good-quality yoga mat. I can’t emphasize enough how a good quality yoga mat will elevate your practice. The ones made by Manduka are great. Don’t get the ones made by Gaiam. They’re not good at all.”

So I look down at my pretty pink yoga mat and what brand do I see at the foot but the word “Gaiam.” Waaaah! You mean to tell me I have to give up the pretty? I must admit the reason I got my mat was for convenience (they were selling it right at the gift shop of my gym), AND it was PINK. With flowers in it.

When I got home, I immediately went to the Interwebs to look up some reviews of yoga mats, and yes indeedy, seems like yogateach was right. Gear.com calls the Manduka Black Mat PRO “the Cadillac of yoga mats.” Sold! Where can I get me some of that? I asked.

The first place Google brought up is Amazon, which apparently is a big purveyor of mats. Who knew? I clicked on the link and it brought up a page with (naturally) a picture of the merchandise.

Ugh. What IS that ugly thing? It’s black. And thick. And, if the reviews are right, HEAVY. Seven freaking pounds! And eighty freaking dollars! Are you kidding me? If you’re going to make me buy something this expensive, why can’t it be pretty? Or at least come in different colors?

You’re going to say that if I want color, then I should get the Manduka Eko Mat, which comes in pink or green. And I would have, except the reviewer of the Black Mat PRO says this is THE yoga mat for Ashtanga, which is my favorite of all the practices.

So to offset the ugliness of the mat, naturally I bought a snazzy bag to carry it in. Check it out:

Isn’t it cute? The brand is called “Hugger Mugger.”  And it’s purple! And it looks big enough to fit more than just a yoga bag. Hate those cylindrical bags that don’t look like they can fit a towel, let alone a water bottle.

To save some moolah I selected the “FREE Super Saving Shipping method” at Amazon, which means I won’t get my mat until probably two weeks from now. Blech. But Zappos ships overnight/two-day for free so I should get my snazzy new bag in a couple of days or so.

In the meantime, I shall continue using my pretty pink mat.

Namaste, dudes.

First Inversion

Okay. While I didn’t expect to stand on my hands on the first try—I am 38 years old, after all—I didn’t expect the attempt to be so freaking taxing. As in shaking arms, numb fingers, BUCKETS of sweat pouring outta me. Yep, I went to my very first yoga inversion workshop yesterday, a handstand workshop with Peggy Mulqueen at Down Dog Yoga in Herndon. I totally got humbled in class yesterday. I think I’ll be shelving thoughts of teacher training for awhile.

As a fitness teacher myself, I can theoretically understand the mechanics: hands spread, eyes focused at one point between your hands, ribs in, legs squeezed together tight. But the actual execution was another thing altogether. Peg was very reassuring though and told us that she (a) didn’t execute her first real handstand until she entered her 40s, and (b) it took her eight years of trying before she finally did.

Man. Sounds just like getting your first novel published. The difference is that handstands are all you. You don’t have to rely on agents and editors and readers to make it happen. All you need is your own strength, determination and practice. Let’s hope.

Teacher Training

Posted in Yoga with tags , , on March 19, 2010 by Karmela

After today’s Vinyasa class, I went up to my teacher (who is an Ashtanga specialist) and asked what she thought of this teacher training program.  She said that while the place is well-run and the teachers there are highly regarded, she thinks it’s geared more towards Hatha and Vinyasa and not towards my love which is Ashtanga. Yep, I’ve determined that I wanna be an Ashtanga teacher, how you like them apples? I just haven’t found anything in the Yogaworld® with the same combination of power moves, high energy, flowing movement and general ass-kicking. Plus it’s the only class I know where techno music fits.

I thought, being in the DC-area and all, that I’d have no probs finding a nearby Ashtanga teacher training program. Wrong! Closest one I saw is in Charlottesville! Total bummer. While I have nothing against travels to JeffersonLand, it’s a good two hours away from me and will (if I go through the program), require not one, but TWO overnight stays, two weekends a month. Oh wait! I have a friend in Charlottesville! Maybe I can bunk in her house! Okay, THAT problem solved. Now, how to come up with $2,750… hmmmmm…

Ommmmm…

I know. Can you imagine high-energy me, the instructor who instructs her kickboxing students to punch like they wanna kill, a freaking yogi?  Nothing could be more ridiculous, right? I mean, I can hear myself cueing the upward-facing dog now:

“Move your asses up in the air, people!” she barked like a drill sergeant.

Heh. Fortunately, I have no interest in chanting or Kundalini or even Hatha. I wanna do Ashtanga, baby! Or some kind of variation of fitness yoga, anything that flows and moves and is high-energy. I wanna be just like one of my current teachers, the ass-kicking Aileen Anderson.

And so now I’m investigating teacher training programs. For what I want to do, doing a Yoga Alliance training program might not be the best fit. I’m thinking maybe I should do a program sponsored by one of the fitness bodies, like AFAA or YogaFit, although YogaFit’s curriculum is accepted by Yoga Alliance.  Purists will probably pooh-pooh, but for my interests, I think that might be the best way to go.

Cross Training

Posted in Fitness with tags on March 8, 2010 by Karmela

Today, my hubby ran a 10-miler. To train for this punishing (to me anyway, I mean, WHO in their right mind would want to run TEN MILES if they weren’t being chased by a lion) distance, he pretty much ran. As in he hardly cross-trained at all, maybe lifted weights once a week and worked mostly his upper body.

Boring! My fitness regimen is nothing if not constantly shifting. Check this out:

Mondays: Dance Jam class. Low impact, medium aerobic workout.
Tuesdays:  Ballet.  Stretch and pull, control, some cardio.
Wednesdays: Kickboxing. High-impact, high-intensity, load-bearing (I wear hand weights)
Thursdays: Folk-dance coaching. This is variable. Some days I get a workout, some days I don’t. Depends on whether the kids fully get the routine right away. If they don’t, they I have to show them, which means leaping and jumping and rolling on the floor.
Fridays: Day of rest.
Saturdays: One hour of weights
Sundays: Vinyasa yoga. Load-bearing, balance, stretch.

Hmmm…now that I look at my schedule, looks vaguely…ADD. As in Jack of all trades, master of none. Lifting for only one day a week? Now how beneficial could that possibly be?  And yoga only once a week? Why even bother?

Maybe a little fine-tuning is in order here.
