In my never-ending quest to get my kids dancing (5-year old DD is already well on her way), I have persuaded 7-year old DS to try out a combination Hip Hop/Tap class this Fall. He is cautiously excited about the hip hop part, less so about the tap part, although he was fascinated with the boys from Debbie Allen’s dance school who performed in SYTYCD’s finale show. I’m pretty confident that he’ll like tap seeing as how in the early years it’s nothing but banging your feet on the floor.
The problem now is finding appropriate clothes. I’m a big proponent of looking like you know what you’re doing from Day 1 of whatever it is you’re trying to do. So I’m shopping around for tap shoes for boys.
Christ. Why do they all look so damned dorky? I basically have two choices: black-patent leather oxfords, or matte-leather oxfords. That’s IT. No wonder not a lot of boys start dancing early on. Why would they when they’re all going to look like Urkel?

Come ON! Why hasn’t anyone designed tap shoes that look like this?

If they did, I bet more younger boys wouldn’t be so resistant to trying out dance. Hmmmm…possible new business venture?
